What is ASTM A106 Grade C Carbon Steel Pipe?

ASTM A106 Grade C is a seamless carbon steel pipe that complies with the ASTM A106/A106M standard and is specifically designed for high-temperature, high-pressure industrial piping applications.

Compared to A106 Grade A/B, A106 Grade C has higher tensile strength and yield strength, making it suitable for high-temperature piping projects subject to higher mechanical loads. It is widely used in power generation, petrochemical, refining, and boiler piping systems to transport steam, petroleum, and natural gas under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.

We supply seamless carbon steel pipes in all specifications of ASTM A106 Grade C, ranging from NPS ⅛″ to NPS 24″ and Sch 10 to 160. Each shipment is accompanied by a complete Material Test Certificate (MTC), and we support inspections by third-party organizations such as SGS and BV. We also provide custom processing services, including cutting, end finishing, bending, and surface treatment.

Characteristics and Advantages

High-Strength Steel Pipe

Higher Mechanical Strength

Minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa and minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, both higher than Grade B. Under the same design pressure and temperature conditions, thinner wall thicknesses can be selected, reducing the pipe’s weight and material costs while saving installation space.

Seamless Steel Pipe

Seamless Construction, Suitable for Pressurized Piping

Manufactured using a seamless process with no welds, this eliminates the risk of leaks at welded joints. The uniform wall thickness provides superior resistance to internal pressure and thermal cycling fatigue, making it suitable for critical pressure piping in continuous operation.

High-Temperature Steel Pipe

Suitable for High-Temperature Applications

Defined by the ASTM A106 standard as seamless carbon steel pipes for high-temperature service, these pipes maintain stable mechanical properties even at high temperatures in hot oil, steam, and high-temperature feedwater systems. They are suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure process pipelines in power plants, oil refineries, and petrochemical facilities.

Steel Pipe Processing

Capable of Welding and Forming

Processing operations such as welding, bending, and flange forming can be performed in accordance with pipeline designs and approved procedures. During welding, attention must be paid to the material’s actual chemical composition, carbon equivalent, preheating requirements, and welding procedure qualification requirements.

High-Temperature Piping Systems

Meets a Wide Range of Industrial Transportation Needs

Suitable for high-temperature piping systems in power generation, petroleum refining, chemical production, and other applications that meet material compatibility requirements, facilitating the selection of appropriate pipe grades for engineering projects based on design conditions.

FAQ

The main differences between the two are as follows:

Grade C: Has a higher maximum carbon content (up to 0.35%, compared to 0.30% for Grade B) and higher tensile and yield strengths. Its advantage lies in its higher allowable stress, which allows for thinner wall thicknesses; its disadvantage is poorer weldability, requiring preheating and post-weld heat treatment.

Grade B: The standard grade for most high-temperature piping; it features a relatively simple welding process and is more suitable for routine on-site construction.
